  1. concentrate verb (GIVE ATTENTION)

    [I or T] to direct your attention or your efforts towards a particular activity, subject or problem
  2. carve verb
    /kɑːv//kɑːrv/ v [I or T]
    • to make something by cutting into especially wood or stone, or to cut into the surface of stone, wood, etc.
    This totem pole is carved from/out of a single tree trunk.
    He carved her name on a tree.
    Some of the tunnels in the cliff are natural, some were carved out (= cut into the rock) by soldiers for defensive purposes.
    • to cut thin pieces from a large piece of cooked meat
    Would you like me to carve (the chicken)?
  3. dismiss verb (FORGET)

    [T] to decide that something or someone is not important and not worth considering
    I think he'd dismissed me as an idiot within five minutes of meeting me.
    Let's not just dismiss the idea before we've even thought about it.
    Just dismiss those thoughts from your mind - they're crazy and not worth thinking about.

    • describes hair that is not tied back

    A few loose sheets of paper were lying around.
  5. coward noun

    They branded her a coward for informing on her colleagues during the interrogation.
